Nahuel Huapi National Park

On Thursday, March 9th, we got onto the bus and drove west of town, toward the Nahuel Huapi National Park.  We stopped at Cerro Campanario, where we went up the ski lift to the top.

We took in the spectacular views and wandered around.

We were surprised to see a hawk on the railing of one of the overlooks, seemingly unafraid of people.  This was the first time, but not at all the last time, that we would see a chimango carracara, a falconid scavenger that behaves more like a pigeon than a falcon, hanging around people, hoping for handouts.

We went back down to the bus and headed farther west, getting off for a walk in the woods with our local guide, which ended up at a spectacular overlook (Mirador Brazo Tristeza?).

Next was a visit to the Gilbert craft brewery, where we talked with the owner and had lunch, which included a good wild boar stew and three good beers.

After getting back to our hotel room, we decided to walk into town for dinner.  The road was torn up, apparently for widening, so the walk was not pleasant.

We had hot chocolate at Rapa Nui, then went to the Swiss restaurant, La Marmite, for some nice trout.

We stopped at Rapa Nui for an even larger hot chocolate.  Then we found a taxi stand and took a taxi back to the hotel.
