Plovdiv

On Thursday, August 29th, Stefan took us on a walking tour of Plovdiv, which in ancient times had been the important city of Phillippopolis.  We saw ancient ruins, including the library, the stadium and the theater.

We then visited a number of Bulgarian Revival houses, now museums, built during the 19th century by merchants who had gotten rich when Bulgaria was one of the most prosperous parts of the Ottoman Empire. At one of these museums there was an exhibition of paintings by well-known local artist Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, who had radically changed his painting style, from realism to more expressionistic, after losing the use of his right hand due to a stroke.

Mary Joy wasn't feeling at all well by the end of the walk, so after lunch at Dreams on the Stambolov Square, we went back to the hotel to rest.  Later, Mary Joy ordered a bowl of soup from room service, while I went out and had a pizza and beer (not bad) at Gusto.
