On Friday, August 30th we got on the bus again and drove to Stefan's home town of Kazanlak, in an area famous for roses and for the tombs of ancient Thracian kings. We visited a museum, along with some of those tombs.
Nearby is Shipka Pass, site of an important battle during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, leading to Bulgarian independence. There we were given box lunches (sandwiches, grapes, etc.) which we ate outside the church that had been built there as a memorial to the dead in that battle.
After lunch, we drove on, to the Black Sea resort town of Nesebar, a Unesco World Heritage site for its many Byzantine churches. After checking in at the Hotel St. John, the group went on an orientation walk. then had a nice dinner on the terrace of our hotel.
