Halong Bay

On Sunday, January 14, I was feeling much better, and, unlike in Patagonia, no one else had picked up my bug, so, we said goodbye to Hanoi and headed off on a 3-to-4-hour bus ride to Halong Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage site filled with a spectacular array of rocky islands.  On the way, we stopped at a military cemetery, at a potato field that was being harvested and, for lunch, at a huge workshop for disabled people and its associated store.

At Halong Bay, we got on a tender and went to our boat, which had small but comfortable cabins, and started our cruise around the islands, a cruise that ended abruptly, after an hour or two, when the boat ran aground on a sandbar!  While we waited for the high tide that would refloat us, we took the tender to an island that had a massive cave.

Dinner aboard was good, and included fish draped in an ingenious "net" made from a carrot.  Taking a shower was problematic, as the water flowed down the slightly tilted deck away from the shower drain and toward the shower door.
