The Sacred Valley

On Sunday morning, June 16th, we flew out of Lima to Cusco.  The normal English-language spelling of this city's name is "Cuzco," but since there isn't any particular reason not to use the official Spanish spelling, other than consistency, the hobgoblin of small minds, "Cusco" it is in this blog.

We immediately got on a bus and headed toward the ancient ruins at Pisac.  On the way, we passed through a town where a (belated) Corpus Christi procession was getting started.  We stopped and watched for a while.

We got back on the bus, and stopped at an overlook on the way.

After a pit stop, we went through the valley town of Pisac and up to the Inca ruins above.

From Pisac we went to our hotel, Villa Urubamba, in Urubamba.  It is an unusual place, spread out over beautiful, plant-filled grounds.

That evening, the group had dinner at the hotel, during which we were serenaded by a virtuoso on the Andean pipes (with recorded accompaniment).

Late that night, I had gastrointestinal problems, not nearly as bad as in Argentina or Vietnam, but bad enough.
