A Basque Sheep Farm, Guernica and Bilbao

On Tuesday, September 13th, we left San Sebastian and headed west, into the mountains, eventually arriving at a sheep farm, where we learned how to make some quick yogurt and fresh cheese.

Then we went to the barn and visited the producers of the milk from which the cheese was made.

Next, was Guernica, famous for being the guinea pig for testing Hitler's Luftwaffe by a bombing raid in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.  Guernica is an important center for the Basque nation, a place of assembly and oaths to uphold local liberties, under or around an oak tree.

In Guernica there is a ceramic tile mural copy of the painting that Pablo Picasso made in response to the attack.

Late in the afternoon, we arrived at the endpoint of the tour, the city of Bilbao, once a site of "rust-belt" decay, but now revitalized and recharged.

Francisco took us on a walk through the old town, after which Mary Joy and I had a simple dinner on the terrace outside our hotel, the Hotel Conde Duque.
