Into the Peloponnese

On Thursday, June 7th, we drove west along the Gulf of Corinth to the bridge at Antirrio, where, after stopping at a nearby pastry shop, we crossed and headed east.  Danae announced that the scheduled activity, a cog-railroad trip up the Vouraikos Gorge would not be possible due to a strike.  Instead, after visiting the memorial at Kalavryta to the massacre of that town’s men and boys during World War II, we went to the Cave of the Lakes.   It was interesting, but much, much shorter and less impressive than the Postojna Cave we saw two years ago in Slovenia.

We then had lunch at the nearby Planetero trout farm and restaurant—fresh trout, of course, very good.   While we were there, a herd of goats passed by.

We drove on, through the mountains, to the village of Lagkadia (or Langadia or Lagadia), formerly known for its stonemasons, but now, apparently, primarily a ski resort and almost a ghost town during the summer.  We checked in at the Hotel Kentrikon, where we had a nice lamb dinner.
