On Monday, June 11th, we walked down the hill to
the waterfront, where Danae bought our tickets for the shuttle bus across the
causeway and around the island to the gate of the old town. We visited the town’s main Orthodox church,
Christos Elkomenos (“Christ in Pain”), then headed up the stairs to the Upper
Town. There we visited the restored church
of Agia Sophia (“Holy Wisdom”), then wandered around, but decided not to go all
the way up to the castle at the very top of the island.
When we got back down to the Lower Town, a group of us had
lunch at Matoula, on a terrace overlooking the sea. Not bad, but maybe a little overpriced.
On the way back to the shuttle we bought some art from a local
artist.
That evening, there was a cooking demonstration at the hotel. Mary Joy was one of the six volunteers who
made chickpea-zucchini cakes, tzatziki, moussaka and baklava. She was on the moussaka team. The rest of us got to dine on the fruits of
their labors: not bad.
