On Friday, August 23rd, after breakfast at the hotel (a nice buffet), we went out to see what there was to see. While the Hotel Hammer is very convenient for train travel, getting to Mainz's Old Town requires a 15-minute walk. On the way, we stumbled onto the Schillerplatz, where there is a wonderful, exuberant fountain celebrating the city's famous Carnival.
We went on to the Market square, visited the Cathedral and had lunch at the Dom-Cafe.
Then we went to the Gutenberg Museum, where, after a demonstration of how the early printing press worked, we wandered around the exhibits.
Next, we, with some difficulty, tracked down the Sanctuary of Isis and Magna Mater, an ancient Roman archeological site in the basement of a modern shopping mall. The display of items found there was interesting.
We decided to take a walk on the Rhine River promenade, but first we had to find access to it, which wasn't as easy as expected.
Finally, we went inland again, to find a restaurant that Lonely Planet had given a star, Zur Kanzel. Lonely Planet was right again.
